What are dental sealants?
Dental sealants are a preventative dental treatment made from a thin plastic material. This material is typically applied to the chewing surface of molars and premolars which have a higher likelihood of cavities, especially at younger ages. The sealants act as a barrier between the teeth and cavity causing bacteria essentially ‘sealing out’ plaque, food and acids in the mouth.

How are dental sealants applied?
The tooth will be cleaned and prepared to receive the sealant, then the ultra-thin material is ‘painted’ onto the tooth enamel. This can be done by the dentist, dental assistant, or dental hygienist. Once applied, the sealant bonds with the tooth and hardens. Sometime a curing light is used to help speed up the curing time of the sealant material, reducing the procedure time.

Who should get dental sealants?
Since pit and fissure decay in the molars and premolars begins early in life, children and teens are obvious candidates and should consider having sealants as soon as those teeth come in. Adults can benefit from sealants as well and we see many men and women choose sealants as a cost-effective and proven option for dental care and prevention. Sealants will not eliminate the need for a filling if a cavity already exists, but they can prevent decay in otherwise healthy teeth as long as the sealant remains on the tooth.

How long do dental sealants last?
Dental sealants can last as long as five years in some cases, but it is best to have your dentist check them at your bi-annual checkup. At that time your sealants will be evaluated and you will have the option to have them reapplied if they have been removed or are worn to the point of being ineffective.

With such an affordable and simple solution to preventing cavities, dental sealants are one of the easiest, most cost effective and popular procedures you can choose. Call us at 281-602-3948 or click here to schedule an appointment.
