*Dr. Brett Murphey, Ellie Murphey and Kathy Fischnar on the way to the airport. The van is full with dental supplies and equipment for the dental mission trip to Guatemala.
On Friday, March 17, Dr. Brett Murphey, founder of Woodlands Family Dental and West U Family Dental, once again traveled to Guatemala on a dental health mission trip. This mission trip is an amazing opportunity for members in the dental profession to provide much needed oral health care in underprivileged areas. It is not just about dental care, though. It’s an opportunity to be the hands and feet of Christ. To fulfill a greater purpose. To serve and to give back.
Eighty participants, including twelve dentist and forty dental students will be making the trip together. Dr. Brett Murphey is going on his 17th trip and is bringing his 9 year old daughter, Ellie, for the first time. She plans to play with the kids and offer stuffed animals and hugs to any frightened patient. His mother-in-law, Kathy Fischnar, will accompany them as a translator. “Making people feel comfortable and cared for has always been very important to me,” said Dr. Murphey. “God has blessed me abundantly. The patients have an immense sense of gratitude and grateful spirits. They make such an impact on my personal life, that I feel I get more in return than I gave them in dental care. I cherish the lifelong friendships God has given to me through these dental mission trips.”
Dr. T. Bob Davis, DDS, founder and coordinator of these annual trips, explains that the dental mission trip exists to motivate, educate, and equip Christian dentists to glorify God.
The team returned to the San Raymundo area of Guatemala where they worked the last few years. There, they will set up a dental clinic for exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, oral health explanations, fluoride treatments and a few other surprise treatments they always get to perform that God has awaiting for the group.
Please be praying for the team. For their safety. For their success. But most of all, pray that the spirit of God moves through the team and the other doctors and volunteers who will be serving the beautiful people of San Raymundo.
Our hope is to bring health and wellness to a small corner of the earth. We can start with making healthy smiles and as you know, we believe Happiness Starts with a Smile!

We are overjoyed to announce that this holiday season we will be collecting for Operation Christmas Child! Collections will take place from October 1st through November 16, 2016.
Last year alone, Samaritan’s Purse delivered more than 11 million Operation Christmas Child shoeboxes to children around the world. God used these simple gifts to change the lives of many boys and girls and their families. After the outreach events where children received their shoeboxes, 2.7 million went on to enroll in The Greatest Journey discipleship program. These children were discipled by trained local teachers, and they are now enthusiastically sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. Simple shoebox gifts, packed with love and prayer, are tools for evangelism and discipleship in over 100 countries.
What is Operation Christmas Child (OCC)?
Operation Christmas Child is a project of the international relief organization, Samaritan’s Purse. Their mission is to provide local partners around the world with shoeboxes filled with small toys, hygiene items, and school supplies as a means of reaching out to children in their own communities with the Good News of Jesus Christ. They ship these simple gifts outside the United States to children affected by war, poverty, natural disaster, famine and disease; and to children living on Native American reservations in the U.S.
Can I find out where my shoebox is sent?
Yes! You can Follow Your Box and discover the destination of your shoebox by making the $7 shipping donation online. Just print and attach your unique shipping label to your shoebox gift.
Where can I get a box to fill?
You can use any shoebox, cardboard or plastic. We also have some of the official Operation Christmas Child red-and-green boxes available at both our Creekside and Research Forest locations!
How do I pack my shoebox gift?
Where do I drop off my packed shoebox gift?
You can drop off with our staff at either of our two locations, Research Forest or Creekside. Our Marketing Director, Emily, will be assisting with ensuring that all boxes have shipping labels, boy/girl labels, rubber bands to close them and most importantly that they are delivered before the end of national collection week to an official drop-off location.
Their shoebox is the first gift many children have ever received! The treasures and personal letters inside communicate that someone cares for them and gives them an opportunity to experience the love of God.
You can see why we’re so excited about Operation Christmas Child! Stop by our front desk in either of our two locations (Research Forest or Creekside) to get more information on our goal, learn how to pack a shoebox with your family, and discover other ways to get involved.

Read on for some spiritual impact stories:
Most people know that sugar can eventually lead to tooth decay. For this reason many people have switched to drinking sugar-free drinks in an attempt to avoid the potential damage sugary drinks can have on their teeth. With sugar substitutes such as xylitol and sorbitol being credited with a reduction in tooth decay, sugar-free drinks have been thought to be more teeth friendly. That belief might not be true. The Oral Health CRC, a group of government sponsored researchers from Australia, published a study suggesting that sugar-free drinks contribute to tooth erosion just as much as sugary beverages do.
The researchers tested the effects of 23 common sodas and sports drinks on 70 extracted human molars. They found that those drinks containing acidic additives caused measurable damage to the tooth enamel, even if they did not have sugar in them.
Tooth decay starts to occur when plaque is allowed to sit on your teeth and mix with the sugars in the foods and drinks in your diet. Plaque contains bacteria that feed on the sugars in your food and drink and as the bacteria feeds it creates acid as its waste. This acid can dissolve the hard enamel of your teeth. During the early stages it strips away enamel, called tooth erosion, and then in the late stages it can invade the pulp of your tooth causing the decay.
Although sports drinks contain sugar they are generally considered to be a healthier beverage choice, but they’re not when it comes to tooth erosion risk. Six out of eight sports drinks tested caused enamel erosion and softening. “Coca-Cola and the majority of the sports drinks caused enamel hardness to decrease by 30 percent to 50 percent,” said one of the researchers.
Are you still able to enjoy your favorite sugar-free drinks? We will leave that up to you! Just be sure to check for the amount of acidic additives in the ingredients listed when making your drink selection. And remember not to brush your teeth immediately after finishing a drink, as this can brush away the softened tooth layer. Instead rinse your teeth with water or chew on some sugar-free gum. The gum will help work up saliva and that will rinse away some of the damaging acids.

All of our staff here at Woodlands Family Dental, wanted to reach out and help support our community and those affected by the recent flooding. We have spoken to several patients that had damage due to the flooding and one family, in particular, that lost everything. They had moved into their home only days before and were not completely unpacked when the rains came. We need your help in collecting items to help get them and so many others back on their feet! If you have non-perishables, bottled water, Gatorade, cleaning supplies, etc. please stop by either of our locations to donate!
We are also collecting items such as formula, baby diapers and wipes, baby food, toiletries and more. For items that we collect that are not given straight to a family in need they will be donated to the local shelters that are housing people affected by the flooding. We want to say THANK YOU in advance for all your help and support collecting items for those in need!!!
